A History of Golf Clubs in Fife

Description Golf has been played in Fife for well over 500 years, more than half of the last millennium, and it is rightly still regarded as the "Home of Golf". The influence on the game, by Fife golfers has been enormous. Not only were most of the early club and ball makers born and had their business in the Kingdom, but the great early winner of the Open also lived and died here. In particular, Tom Morris Sr and Young Tom, his son, between them won eight Championships. They were followed by James Braid, born in Earlsferry, who was to become the first golfer to win five Open Championships and who, like Tom Morris Sr, also established himself as a much respected golf course architect, whose courses have stood the test of time and still provide a challenge for the modern golfer and the incredible technological equipment which they use. It was two Dunfermline born Scots, Robert Lockhart and John Reid who were responsible for introducing the game to the United States where John Reid is still referred to as 'The father of American golf, and whose portrait hangs in the USGA Museum in Far Hills. Little could he have imagined the enormous explosion that golf would make in the States, but I am sure he would be delighted to know that the great American golfers would be travelling to St Andrews in July 2000 to take part in the Open Championship on the Old Course. However, St Andrews and Fife are not just about Championship golf, they stand for all that is best in. the game. Enjoyable, challenging courses and friendly and welcoming clubs, available at prices that make the game affordable to all, coupled with a knowledge and respect for the traditions and standards of the game that are so important in today's world and must not be forgotten. Long may the golfers of Fife remind the rest of the world what a wonderful game golf is and may their influence continue for the whole of this new Millennium. 1. Aberdour 2. Anstruther 3.
