IRELAND THREEPENCE COINS See Photos Below Information About The Irish Threepence Coin (3d) Part of the pre-decimal “Barnyard” series designed by Percy Metcalfe The animal chosen for the threepence was the hare Minted from 1928 until 1968 and used until Decimalisation in 1971 At the time it was worth 1/4 of a shilling or 1/80 of a pound Originally struck in nickel from 1928, in 1942 it was changed to cupronickel – 75% copper and 25% nickel The coin measured 0.695 inches (17.7mm) in diameter and weighed 3.23995 grams On the reverse of the coin is the hare and the obverse featured the Irish harp. From 1928 to 1935 the date was split either side of the harp with Saorstat Eireann (Irish Free State) circling around. From 1939 to 1968 the inscription changed to Éire on the left of the harp and the date on the right
