Professional Reagent Area Information
The test reactswith acetoacetic acid in urine. It does not react with acetone orB-hydroxybutyric acid. Some high specific gravity/low pH urine may givereactions up to and including "Trace". Clinical judgement is needed todetermine "Trace" results. Normal urine specimens usually yield negativeresults. Detectable levels of ketone may occur in urine during physiologicalstress conditions such as fasting, pregnancy and frequent strenuous exercise. In ketoacidosis, starvation or with other abnormalities of carbohydrate orlipid metabolism, ketone may appear in the urine in large amounts before serumketone is elevated. False positive results (Trace) may occur with highlypigmented urine specimens or those containing large amounts of levodopametabolites. Compounds such as Mesna that contain sulphydryl groups may causefalse positive results or an atypical colour reaction.
