4ft Small Double Headboards and Footboards

A Headboard attached to the head of a bed and they were traditionally used as insulation - to keep draughts way from the head and neck of the person sleeping. The footboard is placed at the foot of the bed and served the same original purpose; protecting the sleeper's feet from cold air.

In a more modern society when droughts have been mostly isolated from our homes, Headboards and Footboards are by no means necessary for the functionality of a bed - but there is little doubt that they can be used to add the finishing touches to a bedroom and make the bed look like the luxurious centrepiece it deserves to be.

Materials and Style

Headboards and footboards are available in a wide range of materials, designs and colours so that there is something to suit every room and style. The best aesthetic result is achieved by choosing a matching headboard and footboard and giving some thought to whether the material and style match the tone of your bedroom and your choice of bedding.

For example, in a very modern minimalistic or industrial style room you may choose the cool striking appearance of a chrome, metal or faux leather headboard/footboard, whereas in a room that is more retro in design, with warm mixed colours and patchwork blankets, you might choose padded fabric or a rich wooden look.

Size

For the best result, choose a headboard and footboard designed to go with the size of your bed. 4ft refers to the width of the bed; 4ft is a standard double and is smaller than king or queen-sized beds.

Shape

Most head and foot boards are rectangular but to create a slightly different look in your room there are some exceptions. For example, the Portman Headboard has a scalloped top and a Queen Ann style headboard is significantly higher in the centre than at the edges.

Fittings and Fixtures

Most head and foot boards fit to the bed but some are wall mounted and require fixing in place with screws and wall plugs.
