Which kind of Dewalt nailgun do you need?

There are two types of nailgun available: First-fix nailguns and second-fix nailguns. Each type of nailgun is designed with different tasks in mind. Therefore, the nature of the job you are undertaking will determine which kind of nailgun you need.

What are first-fix Dewalt nailguns?

First-fix nailguns are also known as framing nailguns. They are used for nailing rough woodwork, such as timber frame studwork, joists, flooring, fencing, and roofing eaves. First-fix nailguns use large nails and can often leave an indent in the wood, for this reason, they should not be used in internal areas that require a high standard of finish. The DCN692N-XJ is an excellent first-fix Dewalt nailgun, it uses an 18V XR battery and includes the following features:

  • Two different power settings to allow the nailgun to fire nails of any length.
  • Sequential mode that allows precise placement and bump actuation for increased productivity.
  • Mechanical operation for trouble-free, low-maintenance operation.
  • Class-leading sound and vibration figures.
  • A versatile magazine that accepts many types of collated framing nail.
  • A reversible hook that can be used to hang the nailer on a belt or ladder rung.
  • Thumb wheel depth adjustment.
  • Safety lock-off to prevent accidental discharge.
  • Auto lockout on empty magazine to prevent the nailgun from being dry fired.
What are second-fix Dewalt nailguns?

Second-fix nailguns use much smaller nails than first-fix nailguns and are ideally suited to interior tasks for which a high standard of finish is required. Second-fix nailguns can be used to fix architrave around door frames, skirting boards, and dado rails. This type of nailgun is available in either straight or angled versions. Straight nailguns fire nails at a perpendicular angle and are great for most simple jobs. Angled nailguns have an angled magazine which offsets the body of the nailgun, allowing it to nail in tight corners and hard-to-reach spaces. Many professionals prefer angled nailguns for this reason. Angled nailguns are also often capable of firing slightly larger gauge nails than their straight-angled variants.
