Stay Connected on the go with an Unlocked MiFi

Also known as pocket WiFi, MiFi unlocked units are small portable devices that allow users to take their own broadband connection wherever they go. On eBay, you will find a vast selection of both new and used unlocked MiFi units, at a range of prices to suit all budgets.

MiFi works in a similar way to home broadband, but instead of being connected to a fixed line the MiFi unit is highly portable and taps into a 3G or 4G network. The user can then connect devices such as laptops or tablet PCs to the MiFi device to access the internet. A MiFi unlocked unit required a SIM card to operate, data only SIM cards on both monthly and pay-as-you-go contracts are available from most major networks for this purpose.

Dongles are made to connect to just one device, whereas with MiFi an ad-hoc network is created that can be shared by up to ten different devices.

MiFi devices can be useful in a number of different situations including:

• Travelling on holiday.
• Working on the move.
• For students living in shared or temporary accommodation.
• As emergency back up for home WiFi.
• For use in small offices with no fixed line such as portacabins on building sites.

A MiFi unit that has not been unlocked can only work with SIM cards from a single network, with an unlocked MiFi the user is free to choose whichever network they prefer, and will also have the ability to change between networks as frequently as they want, subject to any SIM contracts they may have.

Specific instructions may vary depending on make and model, so always check the manufacturers instructions. Usually, however, MiFi devices are easy to set up and, unlike dongles, do not require that any special programs are installed on your devices, simply switch on the Mifi, and within a few moments, your devices should be able to detect its signal. The devices can then be connected to the MiFi in the same way as you connect to your home wireless broadband.
