Osmiroid is British company which was founded in 1918 by Edmund Perry. The company ceased trading in 1991. It is famed for making Osmiroid 65 and Osmiroid 75 pens in the mid-20th century. Today calligraphists and collectors search for and use these iconic pens and the nibs are much sought after. These fountain pens are still highly thought of as being among the best calligraphy pens.

About the brand

Edmund Perry was the grandson of James Perry, who was instrumental in the development of pens with practical steel nibs. James Perry was an educationalist who wanted to make writing easier for pupils who had a tedious wait for their quill pens to be mended. He came up with the idea of slitting a metal pen to give flexibility and ink flow. James and his brother Stephen began manufacturing the pens under the name Perry & Co. These pens were dip pens which meant they had no internal ink barrel and had to be filled by dipping into an inkwell.

In the 1940s the company decided to manufacture its first fountain pen . Unlike the earlier dip pens, fountain pens have an internal reservoir of ink. The Osmiroid 65 was developed for school children with nibs which could be used by both right-handed and left-handed writers, and for the different types of handwriting that was being taught particularly italic writing. The company improved upon the 65 with the introduction of the 75 pen, which was slimmer and was made of a better quality of plastic.

Popular buys for the calligraphy writer and Osmiroid enthusiast are Osmiroid calligraphy sets which contains a set of different nibs for different styles and size of writing and ink drawing.
