Pedestal desks, originally crafted in England during the 1800s, are large desks with pedestals at either side, which often feature drawers. The pedestals support the top of the desk. Traditionally, these desks were quite large and sturdy. Today, there is a wide range of pedestal desk sizes and shapes available.

Pedestal desks are traditionally made of strong wood, and they may feature several different types of wood or wood inlays. These desks generally also had a leather top or a leather mat that covered the top. Pedestal desks are now made of a range of materials, including metal and some types of plastic.

Classic pedestal desks are stained wood, and they’re available in a wide range of natural wood colours. These desks can also be painted any colour, although white, brown, black, dark blue, dark red, or green are often the most popular options. Metal pedestal desks are often white, gold, or silver, and pedestal desks designed for gaming tend to be matte black. Some pedestal desks retain the classic, heavy look, and they may feature carvings or scrollwork. More modern desks are often slimmer and lighter, and they may have a cleaner, more minimal appearance.

Most pedestal desks are not adjustable. However, some of the more modern pedestal desk styles allow you to push a button or crank a lever to move the top of the desk up and down. This means that you can either sit or stand at the desk, and you can adjust it so that it’s at a comfortable height for your work.

Although some desks that feature a simpler design may not offer storage solutions, most desks feature at least one central drawer. Because they’re so tall and have such large sides, pedestal desks usually have room for several drawers. Many desks feature a central drawer under the middle of the top and have three to four drawers along each side, offering plenty of organizational opportunities. More open pedestal desk styles often feature open shelving instead of drawers. Other desks have doors, with each pedestal acting as a small cabinet. Some pedestal desks also feature a top hutch or shelving piece with additional shelves or drawers for storage.
