Nikon Camera Lenses and Filters

Nikon are a world leading brand producing a vast range of camera equipment for amateurs and professionals alike. With over seventy camera lenses available from Nikon and third parties for DSLR cameras and many different types of filters, it can be confusing when trying to purchase the right equipment for your kit, especially if you're a beginner.

Lenses

When you purchase a lens, bear in mind that the bigger the number in mm, the closer the view. This number is the focal length of the lens. The 'f/' number determines the aperture or how much light the lens lets in.

A good lens to start with is a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens, as this will give you a good middle ground from which to experiment with. At this distance, you will see pretty much what the human eye sees. The aperture is wide so it will take good pictures in low lighting.

For a more detailed view from a distance choose a 70-300mm f/4.5. Being a telephoto lens you'll be able to easily zoom in on landmarks while on holiday or capture a football game from far away.

UV filters

This type of filter stops UV light from entering the camera. This is important to prevent black sunspots and solar flares. As UV light is not important for taking pictures, it can be left on your Nikon camera at all times to provide some protection to the lens.

Neutral density lens

Being able to slow down shutter speeds with this filter, you'll capture fast moving subjects such as waterfalls and clouds with an interesting blurred effect. A lower depth of field will also make subjects in portraits stand out from their background.

Whatever lenses or filters you decide to go for, always check that they are compatible with the model of your Nikon camera.
