Rear receiver hitch
Rear receiver hitches are the most common type used when towing a standard domestic trailer. It comes complete with a square receiver tube that is extremely versatile due to its shape. When it comes to mounting, rear receiver hitches are fixed straight onto the frame of the vehicle at the back. The weight ratings for these commercial vehicle parts are on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the most heavy duty and 1 being the lightest.
5th wheel hitch
Hitches of this type are very heavy duty and are mounted into the bottom of a truck bed adjacent to the rear axle. They are used particularly on travel trailers, car hauliers and large campers. What makes 5th wheel hitches unique is that the coupling device is part of the hitch assembly and not the trailer. The kingpin is received by the hitch which then secures it using a jaw mechanism. Notably, 5th wheel hitches are only suitable for vehicles that are larger than cars.
Weight distribution hitch
Although weight distribution hitches are attached to the rear hitch of a vehicle, they are still classed as hitch/hitch attachment. Mostly seen on camping RVs, they are designed to distribute the tongue weight evenly across the trailer and the tow vehicle. They work using long spring rods, which leverage the connection point. These spring rods hold some of the tongue weight and spread it out to other parts, therefore taking the weight off the back of the tow truck. This then aids smooth steering.
