Nikon Camera Battery

A camera battery provides power for your camera so that photos can be taken and stored either on the camera's internal memory or onto SD cards. All digital cameras and some models of film camera will require a battery to operate.

There are several types of camera battery to choose from and the choice of battery for your camera is determined by the manufacturer, or the user's preference if that is an option.

There is some flexibility in the camera battery that is used. They include heavy duty and rechargeable batteries , plus powerpacks, coin cells and lithium batteries. Some camera manufacturers design their cameras so they will only work with powerpacks that have been manufactured by them, whereas other models are compatible with generic power sources.

Types of camera battery

Alkaline camera batteries are available in a range of sizes with an estimated shelf life of 5 years.

Rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries come in different sizes. The battery's power/use ratio is measured in milliamp-hours (mAh), indicating the battery's full charge storage capacity. A Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable battery has more power output and a longer lifespan, but is more expensive.

Lithium camera batteries are non-rechargeable and some have a long life span, lasting for up to 10 years if the device has a low idle power drain. They are available in four standard sizes. Lithium-Ion camera batteries are lightweight and powerful but unlike lithium batteries, they are rechargeable.

Camera battery packs are designed to last a lot longer than standard alkaline and nickel batteries. They are available in two styles, as internal and external battery packs.

Button cell camera batteries are a form of lithium battery. Most camera manufacturers no longer use this form of battery as the lithium battery is more popular.

A Nikon camera battery takes the form of a rechargeable lithium-ion external battery pack. The battery is placed in an external battery charger, which is connected to a power source for charging. Once fully charged, the battery pack is inserted into the battery compartment in the camera, ensuring that the connectors on the battery are facing the right way. The battery includes overload and short circuit protection for safety.

Disposing of camera batteries

Once they have reached the end of their usable life, Nikon camera batteries should be disposed of properly, ideally at a specialist recycling centre rather than thrown away with your household waste.
