Links policy

To protect our members, listings or products can’t contain links that direct customers to a site other than eBay, even if the link is not clickable.

Policy overview

Links that direct customers to a site other than eBay are not allowed, except when linking to:

  • Information on delivery services.
  • Product videos, e.g. reviews, product demonstrations or installation.
  • Other legally required information.

This policy applies whether the link is clickable or not, and includes any attempts to direct a customer off a page. It extends to all member-created content, such as listings, eBay Shop pages and headers, seller profile pages, newsletters, images and so on.

Links that direct customers to other eBay pages are allowed. This includes links to eBay Messages, other eBay items, eBay Shop pages, Follow seller or Add to my Favourite Sellers features.

Any permitted links cannot direct customers to pages that encourage people to view, search or purchase items off-eBay.

What are the guidelines?

Links to product videos are allowed as long as you follow these guidelines:

  • You must be the owner of the underlying rights, including intellectual property rights, or be authorised to distribute it by the owners of such rights
  • The video is specific to the product being sold, such as a product review, demonstration, or installation video

  • The video does not violate any eBay policy. Violations include videos that contain:

    • Adult content
    • Links to prohibited items
    • Payment services that are not accepted by eBay

Third-party service provider credits

Third-parties that provide services such as image hosting and auction services are allowed to include a credit within a listing. However, the credit cannot

  • Include an external (off-eBay) web address or contact information within the credit

The credit must also follow these guidelines:

  • The credit may contain up to 10 words of text (HTML font size 3) and a logo that's 88 x 33 pixels or smaller in size
  • The credit or acknowledgement can't contain promotional material and should only identify the service provided for the listing
  • The credit or acknowledgement should be only for the service being provided
  • The credit can't flash, move or be animated

eBay Shop names or logos

Shop names can’t be a web address, plus the Shop name or logo can’t include ".com", ".net", ".org", ".edu" or any variations such as "_com" or "-com".

The above does not apply to Shop names selected before 1 July 2004.

Shop names or logos must also follow these guidelines:

  • The Store name or logo can’t include phone numbers, email addresses, or other contact information
  • The logo can't flash, move or be animated

Activity on eBay is required to follow this policy, the eBay User Agreement and all applicable laws, as well as respect the rights of third parties. If it doesn’t, eBay may take action consistent with applicable laws and the eBay User Agreement, and may even be legally required to do so. Such actions may include, as an example only: Removing the listing or other content, issuing a warning, restricting activity or account suspension.

Why does eBay have this policy?

By limiting links that direct customers off-eBay, we can deliver a better buying experience by:

  • Supporting a more secure marketplace
  • Making it easier for buyers to view all content at the time of purchase, including when buying on mobile devices
