La vicenda si svolge in Toscana dopo la conclusione della Seconda guerra mondiale. Bube, un ex partigiano, corteggia Mara, sorella di un suo amico morto in uno scontro con i fascisti. Il suo inserimento nella vita civile è difficile. Uccide un maresciallo dei carabinieri con il figlio, dopo una lite con un prete che non voleva farlo entrare in chiesa. Mara, pur amandolo, si sente attratta da Stefano da lei conosciuto quando Bube è costretto a fuggire in Francia. Però si viene a sapere che Bube è stato estradato e sarà processato a Firenze. Mara segue il processo e promette al ragazzo di aspettarlo. Quando viene condannato all'ergastolo inizia per lei una vita di attesa, interrotta da brevi visite al penitenziario.
