Armed with the patronage of Queen Victoria and the Tsarina of Russia, suits for all occasions and her nurse's bonnet, she strode forth. The story of her travels and encounters in search of the lepers and of the elusive remedial herb, found only in Yakutsk, is astounding. Indeed there was much scepticism from certain quarters that such a feat could be possible, let alone by a woman. Kate Marsden tells her story with passion, determination, at times displaying an endearing vulnerability and a refreshing wit.
