Die einzige Zuflucht, die ihr bleibt, ist ihre Schwester Stella, die in New Orleans lebt, mit einem Mann verheiratet ist, der nach Blanches Meinung weit unter ihrem sozialen Status steht. Blanche versucht, sich im Hause ihrer Schwester einzuleben, doch ihre Unfähigkeit, die Wirklichkeit zu akzeptieren, das dadurch verstärkt auftretende Mißverhältnis zwischen tatsächlicher und erträumter Realität führt zur Katastrophe. >Endstation Sehnsucht wurde 1947 in New York uraufgeführt. Tennessee Williams erhielt dafür den Pulitzer-Preis. Mit Marion Brando in der Rolle des Stanley Kowalski wurde es in Hollywood verfilmt.
