About this product

Product Information

Sex, money, power, politics and property - the extraordinary story of how five women used their home to influence British society. Cliveden, the grand house and gardens in Buckinghamshire, has always been a place for engineering advancement, devising policy, repairing reputations and hosting fabulous parties. Cliveden was built by the Duke of Buckinghamshire, then the richest man in England; a testament to his love for Anna Maria, Countess of Shrewsbury, whose husband he scandalously killed in a duel. The subsequent owner, Elizabeth, Countess of Orkney, was the King's lover until the relationship became an untenable threat to national politics. It was also here that Rule Britannia was performed for the first time. The piece was commissioned by the German Princess Augusta for her daughter's third birthday party. The music was an instant success and helped reposition her husband as a contender for the crown. Later, Harriet, Duchess of Sutherland entertained Queen Victoria, Gladstone and Garibaldi. After Harriet's death, Queen Victoria was horrified to discover that the house was to be bought by an American- Nancy Astor, Cliveden's last owner. Britain's first female MP, who flirted with Fascism and connived in appeasement, was also a nurse, tending the soldiers who filled the beds in Cliveden's dining room when it was turned into a hospital during the world wars. Over three centuries, Cliveden has been the setting for political controversy and passionate scandal. It is perhaps no surprise that Christine Keeler and David Profumo met at a pool party there.
