About this product

Product Information

Nicknamed the 'Whistlers', the 200 members of the English Electric Class 40 were amongst the most distinctive of all the locomotive designs to emerge as a result of the Modernisation Plan of 1955. Designed initially for express passenger services, the first of the class emerged in 1958 and were allocated to the eastern region where they replaced steam on the London-Norwich main line. Subsequent deliveries saw the class's area of operation extend to the London Midland, North Eastern and Scottish regions and the range of operations extended to include parcels and freight traffic. Latterly associated with depots in the north of England and Scotland, mass withdrawal of the type began in the late 1970s and the final example was withdrawn in 1988. A number, including the prototype in the National Collection, survive in preservation. Drawing upon his own collection of photographs recording the class's 30 years of service, supplemented by the work of other photographers, Gavin Morrison has gathered together a colourful pictorial tribute to this popular class. Covering the class's operation over the BR network from the earliest days through to the final withdrawal, the book illustrates that within the class there were considerable variations of detail and livery. Alongside the photographic content, the introduction and captions provide the reader with a history of the class and its operations. Almost 50 years after the decision to build the first of the type was announced, interest in the 'Whistlers' remains strong. This new additional to Ian Allan Publishing's successful range of all-colour albums devoted to first-generation diesel designs is certain to be popular amongst modellers, who have recently been offered a brand-new model in 4mm scale, preservationists and historians.
