THEY say you have to be a character to be a goalkeeper. Eric Nixon is certainly that. 'Big Eric' is the Tranmere legend who enjoyed plenty of glory days in between the sticks for Johnny King's legendary Rovers team. They liked a drink or two, and they weren't afraid of a fight but they made sure they put on a show when it came to matchday. The Super Whites made Wembley their second home and turned Prenton Park into a fortress on Friday nights as they climbed the divisions and dared to knock on the door of the Premier League. Eric was right at the centre of it all. From the dressing room bust-ups to the parties, the trophy celebrations to the free-flowing football, success was achieved on a shoestring that confirmed the Wirral club's place in the hearts of Merseyside football fans. But Tranmere wasn't Eric's first love. That was Manchester City - a very different club to the one it is today. Back then, Eric just walked into the club he idolised as a boy and asked for a trial. Two years later he was their number one. It was a dream come true for the lad from Manchester, who had to overcome the tragedy of losing his father from a heart attack at an early age. Little did Eric know, that he too would suffer from heart problems - ending up in hospital after suffering from chest pains during a match. Adapting to life after football has brought its own challenges for Eric, but in times of trouble he has swapped the pitch for the stage and followed in the footsteps of his musical number one - Elvis Presley.
