Notes
Entitled '94 -'04 and featuring exclusive double A-sided 7" singles, limited and numbered it will be released on May 31st, 2019 through BMG / Echo / Infectious Records. Debut outing Jack Names The Planets, complimented by similarly interplanetary singles, Girl From Mars and Angel Interceptor, Top Ten denting Goldfinger and Oh Yeah and the early noughties success of Shining Light and Burn Baby Burn mapped a glorious trail of pop having picked up the baton from fellow countrymen The Undertones, careering through the periphery of Britpop, acknowledged by their peers whilst picking up accolades along the way, including an Ivor Novello for Shining Light - the set also includes Clones, available for the first time on vinyl. 1994 saw the youthful trio from Downpatrick enter the fray with the independently released Jack Names The Planets before heading out on tour (with a leave of absence from Downpatrick High School) with the likes of Elastica and Weezer - recently reacquainted at Wembley resulting in a 12,500 people Ash singalong. Rapidly accruing plaudits, the band signed to Infectious Records releasing two further singles Uncle Pat and Petrol, both included on the mini album, 1994's Trailer. Then began a run of singles heralding the prodigious song-writing talents of teenage singer / guitarist Tim Wheeler - Kung Fu with it's celebratory Jackie Chan references, along with the chart-bothering success of Girl From Mars and Angel Interceptor (Top 20) before reaching a career-high chart position with the sublime Goldfinger - #5 and Oh Yeah - #6 and providing the band with a number one debut album in shape of 1977, going on to sell in excess of 750,000 copies. Spawning the singles, Jesus Says, Wildsurf and Numbskull, 1998's Nu-Clear Sounds went Top Ten attaining gold status then following a hiatus of sorts Ash entered the new millennium with Free All Angels - another high point in a twenty-five year timeline, reaching number one and achieving platinum status and home to yet another brace of brilliant singles in Shining Light #8 and Burn Baby Burn #13. Afforded an Ivor Novello award for 'Best Contemporary Song', Shining Light highlighted the song-writing prowess of Tim Wheeler and along with the rest of this boxset exhibits what an enviable and incredible cache of brilliant singles both he and band mates - bassist, Mark Hamilton, drummer Rick McMurray and guitarist Charlotte Hatherley who made her recording debut on Life Less Ordinary and parted ways in 2006. 14 Top 40 singles * 2 #1 albums * 2 platinum albums * 2 gold albums 7" track-listing is: Jack Names The Planets / Petrol - 1994 Uncle Pat / Kung Fu - 1994 / 1995 Girl From Mars / Angel Interceptor - 1995 Goldfinger / Oh Yeah - 1996 A Life Less Ordinary / Jesus Says - 1997 / 1998 Wild Surf / Numbskull - 1998 / 1999 Shining Light / Burn Baby Burn - 2001 Sometimes / Candy - 2001 There's A Star / Envy - 2001 / 2002 Clones* / Orpheus - 2002 / 2004 * available on vinyl for the first time
