Kneller Hall was founded in 1857 by the Duke of Cambridge, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, at a time when British bands were under the influence of Continental musicians. The establishment of the Royal Military School of Music succeeded in breaking free from this influence and in creating a new level of professionalism which has made British bands the standard for military music worldwide. This is the history of both the building, constructed by the court painter Godfrey Kneller in 1709, and of the development of music in the British Army.
