Young and inexperienced directors normally cut their teeth on basic location shoots. But, how many of them know the simple rules of the game? The rules are no more than the accumulated knowledge of crews operating on the road over many years. The success or failure of a shoot may depend as much on the provision of parking as the innate genius of the director. Shooting on location is a simple introduction to the basic grammatical rules of single camera film or video, together with a round up of simple roadcraft tips which should ensure that the inexperienced director may organize and achieve a shoot with the minimum of tears being shed by the crew and the minimum of upset to members of the public. This book describes the planning of the location shoot, organization of the recce, contractual arrangements, interview techniques and the planning of a production day with subsequent editing in mind. The instruction is valid for productions shooting on film and those using videotape.
