Nach einer thematischen Einfuhrung folgt die Darstellung der Ausgangslage und Rahmenbedingungen. Anschliessend widmet sich die Untersuchung dem Weg in die Kolonialpolitik. Im vierten Kapitel wird die Theorie des Sozialimperialismus behandelt. Schliesslich wird auf Bismarcks Frankreichpolitik sowie das Gladstone-Kabinett eingegangen. Schon sehr fruh wird deutlich, wie schwer die Personalie Otto von Bismarck zu fassen ist - Christoph Nonn beschreibt ihn gar als die umstrittenste und in der Forschung am meisten diskutierte deutsche Persoenlichkeit. Dementsprechend sind die Beweggrunde fur sein Intermezzo in der uberseeischen Kolonialpolitik nicht minder komplex, ergaben sie sich aus dem Zusammenspiel einer Vielzahl von wirtschaftlichen, sozialen, sowie innen- und aussenpolitischen Faktoren. Otto von Bismarcks Rede im Reichstag am 26. Juni 1884 gehoert definitiv in die Kategorie historisch gewordener Reden, weil sie weitreichende Folgen nach sich ziehen - wenn auch nicht nur im positiven Sinne. Diese Rede markierte namlich ein Umschwenken seiner bis dato antikolonialen Politik und den offiziell verkundeten Beginn bismarckscher Kolonialbestrebungen. Ein Umschwenken, uber dessen Beweggrunde sich Historiker auch uber 130 Jahre spater noch immer nicht ganz einig sind.
