Lucky is a police dog who works with Officer Meade. They are called to investigate a robbery. Lucky barks as the man crawls out from under a porch. The man does not obey until the officer tells Lucky to attack. Then the man obeys and is arrested. Dogs have long been used on patrol. By 1960, Baltimore had a program for training dogs. "It is the oldest K-9 program in the country." German shepherds are the favorite breed for police dog training. Dogs and handlers train together. Dogs are trained in obedience, ability to climb, jump, crawl over obstacles, and follow scents. A dog must learn to apprehend and release a suspect on command. The dog may wear a vest, collar, or badge to identify him. Police dogs live with their handlers and can answer calls at any time. A dog retires after eight to ten years of service and usually stays with his handler. Police dogs assist in making the community a safer place. Stunning photographs accompany the text.
