Synopsis
Excerpt from The Venus of Milo: Its Discovery, the Theories Concerning It, Its Subsequent History In the latter part of February, 1820, a Greek peasant named Georges, working in his garden in the modern village of Castro, built on the summit of a high mountain in the island of Milo, - or Melos, - unearthed some fragments of marble that induced him to continue his digging, because the stones promised to be useful as material for building purposes. If it was so his time had at last arrived. He continued his excavations until he reached a wall and opened to view the top of a niche, which he explored for some seven or eight feet below the surface of the earth. There was this statue, in several pieces, and mixed with them three heads, or hermae, one of Bacchus, one of Mercury, and one of Hercules. Although the peasant was ignorant of the value of his discovery, he never theless knew that this was for him a prize worth.
