Additional Information
Filmmaker and actor Jacques Tati reinvented the art of slapstick comedy, expertly dissecting the nature of sight gags and pratfalls while exploiting viewer expectations to create an ambitious, richly detailed cinematic parlor game perfect for exploring the infinite mysteries of the modern world. This is a collection of Tati's finest films from across his career.

In Tati's charming JOUR DE FETE (1949), the director casts himself as Francois a contented and happy postman in a small, unhurried French village. Things perk up when a traveling carnival arrives in town, and exhibits a film about the speedy and efficient United States Postal Service. Francois takes up the call, and attempts to Americanise his work style.

Tati came into his own and reached new levels of popularity with LES VACANCES DE M.HULOT (1953). The first film to introduce his much-loved alter ego Monsieur Hulot, it sets the pattern for future appearances of the character, throwing the bumbling hero unwittingly into the middle of the action and letting the ensuing mishaps provoke humour ranging from gentle observations to fairly biting satire.

M. Hulot returns with MON ONCLE (1958), a film set along the dividing line between Paris' past and its future. Hulot lives in a colourful, Parisian neighborhood and, lacking employment, spends his days waiting to pick up his adoring nephew from school, and subsequently escorting him to his parents' ultra-modern house. Concerned about his future, Hulot's relatives attempt to find him gainful employment, with little success.

Jacques Tati's spectacular cinematic art reached its peak in the gargantuan achievement of PLAYTIME. Marking the third appearance of Tati's Hulot, the film takes as its subject modern technology and its sometimes disastrous and always hilarious effects on the people living within it. Hulot weaves in and out of view, leaving a trail of bumped heads, offended sensibilities and curious glances in his wake.

PARADE (1974) was Tati's last film and sees the filmmaker return to his music hall roots. He began the project by recording a circus show performance in Sweden, the footage was then turned into a movie showcase for Tati's considerable physical comedy skills.
