Russia, anni Venti del Novecento: nei Vchutemas, i Laboratori Tecnico-Artistici di Stato, si sperimentano nuove teorie artistiche e progettuali, si moltipllcano i dibattiti e le ricerche di quelle avanguardie che, con esponenti come Kandinskij, Malevic, Ródcenko, El Lissítskij e con movimenti come il Costruttivismo e il Produttivismo, segnano la cultura del secolo scorso. Sono esperienze che investono la didattica tradizionale di accademie e scuole di design in Europa, influenzando lo stesso Bauhaus. Raccontare i Vchutemas significa riscattare dall'oblio un'esperienza fondamentale per la nascita e l'affermazione del design: esperienza poco nota, anche perché in Unione Sovietica, alla fine degli anni Venti, le avanguardie vengono soppresse mentre si promuovono indirizzi artistici controllati dallo stato. Un'esperienza sulla quale è utile riflettere, per ragioni storiche ma anche per la flagrante attualità di molte sue declinazioni.
