Negli anni immediatamente successivi alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Padre Lankester Merrin è perseguitato dai ricordi delle violenze commesse contro i suoi parrocchiani innocenti e per dimenticare si reca in Africa. Qui viene avvicinato da un collezionista di antichità che gli propone di partecipare a uno scavo archeologico in Turkana, una remota regione del Kenya, dove è stata riportata alla luce un'antichissima chiesa cristiana bizantina. Il collezionista vuole che Merrin trovi una preziosa reliquia nascosta all'interno della chiesa ma tra le rovine del tempio dorme una presenza ancestrale, in attesa di essere risvegliata. Nel luogo dove nacque il Male, Merrin scoprirà finalmente il suo vero volto.
