Pairzetta stands at her mother's graveside trying not to bawl. Her effort makes her squeeze her new baby sister, Ruth Ann, too hard causing her to wake and cry. Two-year-old Lawrence clings to her skirt and cries along with the baby. Bouncing the baby and patting the back of Lawrence's head, Pairzetta looks at her five other brothers and sisters. Their haunted, empty eyes must mirror her own she knows. Their world has been turned upside down with their mother's death and all of the color and and happiness has drained right out. It is April 28, 1881, their mother's burial day. How will Pairzetta cope with all of these children, put by enough food for winter, make clothes, and take care of them all? She knows her father's hands are full with their Northwest Arkansas farm. Her most immediate worry is how will she keep baby Ruth Ann alive without her mother's milk?
