About this product

Product Information

When HMS Dreadnought was commissioned into Britain's Royal Navy in 1906, this revolutionary "all-big-gun" warship transformed the tactics of naval warfare as much as it reshaped international relations. Powered by steam turbines, heavily armoured and equipped with ten 12in guns mounted in five turrets, Dreadnought was like no other warship then on the high seas. Such was its significance that it sparked a frenetic international naval arms race, as world powers sought to emulate and improve on the design, creating the class of ships we know today as "dreadnoughts." For the next three decades, dreadnought battleships and their successors, the "super-dreadnoughts," dominated the waves, with Germany, the United States, Japan, Russia and other nations vying to build their own all-big-gun warships. The dreadnoughts and super-dreadnoughts would come to blows in earnest during World War I, notably at the battle of Jutland-the greatest clash of naval firepower in history. Illustrated with over 200 images, including historical photographs and technical drawings, this book provides detailed insight into the design, operation and combat history of these epoch-defining weapons, including ship layout, propulsion and engineering, gunnery and fire control. It also explains the life of the crew, drawing on dramatic first-hand accounts and other primary source material from the world's navies. Casemate Illustrated Specials offer unparalleled detail into the weapons, equipment, and machinery of war. Detailed, focused text is accompanied by hundreds of photographs, illustrations, and diagrams, providing a wealth of visual information for the historian, modeler, or researcher. Book jacket.

...you are provided a mass of photos, including some of preserved ships along with a fair number of illustrations and tables to help explain the development of these ships and major systems., When you pick up a Casemate book in this series, you expect to open a door on what the back cover describes as 'unparalleled detail into the weapons, equipment, and machinery of war,' and the author delivers all this in a satisfying, fine-grained read. Most engrossing, however, is his presentation of the thought work behind the design of the Dreadnought, as well as the gradual recognition of the technological evolutions that eventually made this potent machine possible.|9781636240862|, The history of the dreadnought is well told this extensively illustrated volume. The book contains more than 200 illustration, technical drawings, and photographs of various ships and their equipment, armament, and crews., ...offers a spectacular analysis for those with a more than passing interest of the big ships of WWI., For anyone with a love of the sea, Dreadnoughts and Super-dreadnoughts will be useful and interesting, full of fascinating information. Readers more interested in depicting these ships as artists or model builders will enjoy the book's historical accuracy and detail. Far better than some examples of this genre, this book is recommended very highly for all readers., ...even experienced readers of books about battleships will learn a good deal from examining this volume., Author Chris McNab puts forth a splendid effort to let the reader understand just what life was like aboard a warship in choppy seas sailing to its fate at the Battle of Jutland. Some of the photography is simply superb. The description of ranks, personnel, their respective duties and the role of the dreadnought in World War I is engaging and thorough., This book covers [the] design, technology, crew life and operational history of these ships, with numerous design drawings, original art and photographs that capture the awe held for these ships., Unlike those books which are mostly eye candy, this book is a naval history connoisseurs' version of meat and potatoes.
