About this product
Product Information
The Atari 2600 was originally released in 1977 and marketed as the Atari VCS (video computer system). The system continued to be produced for 14 years with the last of the Atari systems hitting the market in 1991. The system was one of the first popular home video game consoles, making it a hit with classic gaming enthusiasts today. The woodgrain or black console’s factory hardware included two of the classic joysticks and a set of paddles and RCA cables to connect the console to a black and white or color television. Both Atari and third-party companies put out a number of other input devices including a keyboard and driving controller. The Atari 2600 model used different color palettes based on the signal format of the television being used. These pallets included the NTSC format which was a 128-color palette, providing much of the pixelated charm of the gaming graphics. The PAL format offered 104 colors while the SECAM palette only offered 8 colors. While game cartridges can be switched between NTSC, PAL and SECAM machines it will often result in wrong or missing colors and a rolling picture. The six switch models of the Atari 2600 output to television channel 3. Some versions included a switch on the bottom of the console that allowed output on channel 2 as well as channel 3. When originally designed these two channels were the least used by broadcast television in most broadcast regions. Besides the Atari branding, some versions of the Atari 2600 have been rebranded as the Sears Video Arcade and were put out by Sears, Roebuck and Co. The Atari video game computer system uses game cartridges to load different games. Popular compatible game cartridges include Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Breakout, Yar’s Revenge, Adventure and Combat. The cartridge that came with the video game system changed over time as popularity for each game waned.
