Un gruppo di dirigenti di alcune miniere sarde viene mandato nel 1956 a Cave del Predi] (Udine), ai confini con l'Austria, per "salvale" la Raibl, una delle più importanti miniere di zinco e piombo d'Europa, ceduta dal "banchiere del Papa" Bernardino Nogara alla società mineraria Pertusola, appartenente al ramo francese dei Rothschild. I tentativi di imporle una nuova organizzazione del lavoro provocano una lunga e agguerrita resistenza dei minatori, che finirà per costringere il governo a non rinnovare la concessione mineraria alla Pertusola, la quale d'altra parte abbandonerà anche le miniere sarde quando i minatori otterranno i salari più alti già in vigore alla Raibl. Sulla base di una ricca documentazione, il volume tesse insieme le storie della Raibl, di Bernardino Nogara, delegalo di Pio XI per l'Amministrazione Speciale della Santa Sede, del figlio Giovanni che dirige la miniera, di Guerrino Gabino che guida i minatori, dei dirigenti della Pertusola abituati in ...
