Si tratta di una ricostruzione biografica che combina una solida documentazione storica con una scrittura giornalistica. Il Bernardo di Pamparana è un contemplativo costretto per obbedienza a impegnarsi nel "mondo" come quando fu incaricato dal papa a bandire la seconda crociata o ad accusare gli eretici o presunti tali (la sua vittima più illustre fu Abelardo). Grande mistico prestato alla politica del tempo, "innamorato di Dio" (Dante lo ha scelto come guida alla contemplazione del mistero divino al termine del Paradiso), è depositario di una grande lezione anche per il nostro tempo: l'azione ha un senso solo se poggia sulla contemplazione.
