About this product

Product Information

One of a small handful of Atari VCS titles released by board game makers Avalon Hill, Shuttle Orbiter puts players in command of an entire space shuttle mission, from start to finish. The game begins with the shuttle launch, and players are then given the task of building a space station in orbit, making frequent visits to the orbital factory (which is constructing the ten station modules), an orbiting fuel depot (the game ends if the shuttle runs out of fuel), and the space station itself, where the station modules must be attached to the core module.

Shuttle Orbiter is all about altitude -- and attitude. With slow climbs to different orbits to rendezvous with the various targets, and occasional flights through fields of space debris that cannot be shot down but only avoided, it takes a while to play this game and patience is a must. The debris and docking screens are the closest Shuttle Orbiter gets to arcade-style action, and the rest require a sharp eye and a lot of patience.

A wee bit of resource management is worked into the game by forcing the player to watch the fuel gauge. But for those willing to play it cool, it's an interesting and largely accurate representation of what future space station construction might be like. The biggest hitch in accuracy: a collision with space debris wouldn't necessarily cost a space shuttle units of fuel, but it could potentially damage the shuttle's outer hull or, at worst, create a rupture leaking air from the crew cabin.

Despite being a fine game, Shuttle Orbiter, like the similarly-themed Project Space Station for the Apple II, gained an unfortunate footnote in history a few years after its release; both games have players piloting the space shuttle Challenger, which exploded after liftoff in 1986.
