Treasures of Down showcases key items which tell the story of County Down from the Middle Stone Age to the present day. The book takes us on a journey through time, with each chapter summarising the key events of County Down's archaeological and historical past, richly illustrated in full colour by treasures to be seen on display at Down County Museum in Downpatrick, the burial place of the patron saint of Ireland, St Patrick himself. The book offers an introduction to a true treasure-house of history, where over 1200 artefacts can now be seen, covering 9000 years of human settlement in the County. Special chapters on prehistoric artefacts include: how St Patrick has been commemorated, and early Christian and medieval discoveries; the fascinating stories of how land and power were fought over in the 16th and 17thcenturies, and how rebellion swept through County Down in 1798, are illustrated with key artefacts and documents of the period. Victorian Down and the Home Rule Crisis are featured, as well as the tale of war and peace which dominated early twentieth century life in the County. More familiar artefacts from post-war Down are also illustrated, ranging from a sculpture inspired by the Troubles to a Muffin the Mule puppet.
