Nella sua vita centenaria Ernesto Sabato ha scritto solo tre romanzi: "Il tunnel" (1948), "Sopra eroi e tombe" (1961) e "L'Angelo dell'abisso" (1974), che chiude la trilogia. Quest'ultimo - tradotto in italiano nel 1977 - fu poi radicalmente rivisto dall'autore, che ne pubblicò in Argentina un'edizione con molti tagli e altrettante nuove pagine. È su quell'edizione che Raul Schenardi ha condotto la sua traduzione, che si può pertanto considerare una sorta di inedito. Una storia oscura e potente ambientata in una Buenos Aires claustrofobica, che anticipa in maniera profetica i tragici avvenimenti politici che l'Argentina avrebbe vissuto pochi anni dopo l'uscita del romanzo. I personaggi dei due precedenti lavori di Sabato ritornano qui per incontrare l'autore stesso, il quale costruisce un'opera che si nutre di ogni forma che la parola può assumere: dialoghi, pagine di diario, articoli di giornale, descrizione di sogni e narrazione pura.
