Figlio di un venditore ambulante, professore universitario, socialista di formazione, Renato Brunetta è l'uomo di governo che ha invitato i laureati disoccupati ad andare a scaricare cassette di frutta, che ha mandato a morire ammazzata quella "sinistra per male" che non gli piaceva, che ha dichiarato guerra ai precari, ai professori, agli studenti, agli impiegati, ai bidelli, insomma a molti di quegli elettori che pure lo avevano votato. Francesco Merlo racconta in un saggio introduttivo la storia di Brunetta come "la storia di un rancore" e ripercorre, attraverso una raccolta di articoli, lettere e corsivi allegramente polemici (spesso corredati dalle repliche dello stesso Brunetta), l'epopea, le altezze e le bassezze di uno degli uomini politici più discussi degli ultimi anni. E in appendice una sorpresa: l'estratto di un elogio dei brevilinei scritto da Amintore Fanfani nel 1936, quando Brunetta non era ancora nato.
