Nel 1784 i milanesi Carlo Giuseppe e Agostino Gerli su commissione del Conte Carlo Andreani costruirono la prima macchina aerostatica italiana sulla base di quella creata nel 1783 in Francia dai fratelli Montgolfier ma migliorandola notevolmente, tanto da renderla più simile alle moderne mongolfiere."Il 19 genn. 1784, a Milano, alla presenza del ministro plenipotenziario conte J.J. von Wilczeck, i Gerli fecero innalzare un prototipo di palloncino che si elevò circa a un'altezza doppia della maggiore guglia del duomo. In seguito ai buoni risultati conseguiti venne intrapresa la costruzione dell'aerostato che avrebbe compiuto l'ascensione con uomini a bordo. Dopo 24 giorni di intenso lavoro, i tre fratelli realizzarono una mongolfiera costituita da un pallone del diametro di circa 21 m, costruito in tela internamente foderata di carta, con l'alloggio dell'equipaggio consistent”
