About this product

Product Information

Henry Patrick Raleigh (1880-1944) was an American illustrator whose drawings of society life defined the Gatsby era. He rose from school dropout at age 12 to esteemed Saturday Evening Post illustrator within the span of two decades. During his nearly forty-year career, Raleigh served as one of the highest paid newspaper and magazine artists in the United States, the lithographer behind many of the United States' government's iconic World War I propaganda posters, and arguably the most prominent story illustrator of the Jazz Age. Raleigh was an incredibly prolific artist, having published 20,000 illustrations by the time he was 43. As a commercial artist working in the field of advertising, very few individuals published as many of their illustrations or earned as much income as Henry Patrick Raleigh. In addition to The Saturday Evening Post, Raleigh's illustrations graced the pages of the era's definitive publications, including Harper's Bazaar, Collier's, and Vanity Fair. They also visually embodied the words of H.G. Wells, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Agatha Christie. This volume is lavishly illustrated with rarely seen photographs and illustrations taken from the private collection of the artist's grandson, Christopher Raleigh. Almost every illustration in the book was scanned from the original, in order to attain an extremely high-quality level of reproduction. * Thoughtful introduction and essay by Christopher Raleigh on his grandfather's life and art * 130 pages of color illustrations on glossy stock with two large foldouts * deluxe hardcover with dust jacket

Reviews
"Raleigh represents a lost culture within illustration, one swimming in atmosphere and mystery, a monochromatic world of half-seen mysteries, a sort of smoky, urban elegance populated by breathtakingly stylish, gorgeous women." -- Mark Schultz, "Henry Raleigh, possibly one of America's most stylish storytellers in pen and watercolor, was a master of scene, design, and making women and their men look elegant and lithe. He defined the ideal smart set life and gritty social settings with equal ease, and lived his life at full throttle and martini shaker when illustrators defined the visual culture within the slick magazines. What an inspiring draftsman and storyteller, a real illustration treasure he was." -- Charles S. Pyle, Director, School of Illustration, Academy of Art University, "Frederick Gruger and his most impressive disciples -- Arthur Brown, Harold Mowat and Henry Raleigh -- represent a lost culture withinillustration, one swimming in atmosphere and mystery, a monochromatic world of half-seen mysteries that enlisted the reader's imagination in completing the picture. What Raleigh brought to this circle, what he did better than anyone else, was a sort of smoky, urban elegance populated by breathtakingly stylish, gorgeous women. His works had a lush, confident looseness and rhythmic flow that carried both emotional weight and veracity of time and place -- the hallmarks of a great illustrator." -- Mark Schultz
