The Inter City 125 High Speed Train (HST) has been a major factor in the success of the British railway network since the 1970s, but it will need replacing soon. A small number of vehicle designs can be freely coupled together in various ways, using electric or diesel power, with good energy efficiency and low running costs. Standards of service on the network as a whole could be improved substantially for the mid 21st century.
