Most likely for repainting purposes (with some speckles and paint residue still left over). From an antique lighting collection in Michigan, USA - see our store for more X-Ray shades in different shapes, sizes and colors. These are X-Ray brand, model number 777 (we have others of this model with the X-Ray label still in tact for comparison purposes). True antiques, these shades date to the early 20th century. These types of shades are great for pendant lights, work lights, wall sconces, porch lights, etc. No cracks in the glass - one just a small, shallow chip along the edge (see closeup).
