It seems the Acer laptop power supply is notorious for wearing out at the DC plug end. It happened to mine about a year ago, and just recently happened to a friend who has the same laptop and power supply. Replacing the cable is not easy as you have to open the power brick to do so, but I've done this many times with other power supplies. Actually, finding a source for the cable is harder than replacing it and I was happy to find the part here. Replacement was successful.
