Anaconda Johnny is the latest collaboration between one of Britain's most innovative and prolific writers Jeremy Reed, who has written more than 45 books of cutting-edge prose and poetry, and widely exhibited photo-artist Jamie McLeod, the pair having previously collaborated on the Marc Almond book Adored and Explored. In Anaconda Johnny they evoke the 21st century spirits of both Genet and Rimbaud, if either were alive with a camera and ink. McLeod creates the artwork with Reed writing the poems. An explosive urban outlaws collaboration fusing deviated visual imagery with poetry. Both artists succeed in working a lurid narrative out of the city's neon-drenched underbelly, its graffiti slashed corridors, and championing its most unlikely anti-heroes, in lyrically propulsive work. The images are walk-on cameos for their subjects to inhabit and poetic operettas for them to expand within. Using fragments of imagery from the stray, black dogs that wander in and out of their unhinged minds together they probe a dark new subject matter, championing the lost and found from the streets. Coupled with the stench of urban detritus and noir-like images for the imagination to feast upon, they concentrate on zones where the flesh and the spirit are in eternal opposition of purpose. Love is defined through the road trip into the endless city of night - through the hypnotic neon pulses and primal screams - somewhere inside the urban labyrinth over the rainbow where their subjects inhabit, pairing youth and death in one foul swoop and its filthy lucre. It's a wild and thrilling trawl through poetry's age-old fixation with adventure and the mortal netherworld of love and ultimately death, at what sounds like a high price for thrills.
