Il "Necronomicon" è un trattato di Ars Goetia, la controparte oscura della Teurgia, che insegna come entrare in contatto con antiche entità disincarnate che un tempo, prima della caduta, regnarono sovrane su questa Terra. Coloro che H. P. Lovecraft chiama "Grandi Antichi" nei suoi racconti. Secondo quanto da lui narrato quest'opera arcana fu scritta a Damasco nell'VIII secolo d.C. da un negromante yemenita, e originariamente si sarebbe chiamata Al Azif, che significa: L'ululato dei Jinn. Secondo la mitologia araba i Jinn erano delle entità che discesero dai cieli nell'era antidiluviana, Coloro che nella tradizione ebraica vengono chiamati Nephilim, gli Dèi che furono precipitati negli inferi rei della loro ribellione. Venuto a conoscenza di queste leggende, Lovecraft decise di utilizzarle per scriverci dei racconti, in cui antichi saperi si fusero con la sua fantasia. Ciò che infatti Lovecraft chiamò Necronomicon, era il Libro segreto dei Nephilim.
