I had a granite headstone so I cleaned it well with elbow grease cleaner and used a stiff nail brush then a gentle go over with very fine wire wool rinsed off and dried. I then decided that trying to paint every letter would take forever so did one line at a time covering the whole lot and then using a razor blade scraper took the excess off, did a second coat. It is more of a classy pale gold than bright yellow gold .
