Recorded at the Blue Room, Woodland Hills, California and A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. First and foremost, Shock Rock: The Early Days is actually just 2000's Brutal Planet with a different title and cover. The inane title, which sounds like it was generated by an Internet search for the words "shock rock" and "early days," has no relevance to the album itself, as Brutal Planet found Cooper reveling in straight-up, White Zombie-inspired metal rather than revisiting the psychedelic horror of his late-'60s/early-'70s heyday. Wickedly snide, but with tongue firmly in cheek, songs like "Sanctuary, "Wicked Young Man," and the appropriately nasty title cut present a real return to form, especially for fans of Cooper's post-Trash output. ~ James Christopher Monger
