Rare First Edition, First Impression of Charles Lyell's important scientific work which helped to establish the new science of prehistoric archaeology in Great Britain. This book was Lyell's way of reversing or modifying his own long-held positions on the three issues. It was a bestseller upon its initial publication and had a great impact due to Lyell's presentation and endorsement of the new evidence for human antiquity. The first edition, first impression of this work, with thirty-two pages of ads to the rear of the book, dated January 1863. Original green pebbled cloth with blind-stamp border decoration and gilt illustration to upper board, rebacked retaining original spine, save a small patch, new endpapers added. Pages with age toning, the odd spot here and there. Board corners bumped. Vg- overall. Weight in excess of 1kg. EU Import Duties apply.”
