The Dubliners: Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna, Ciaran Bourke, Ronnie Drew. Includes liner notes by John O'Regan. A truly amazing debut album, and one that remains as appealing in the twenty-first century as it was in 1964, it launched the Dubliners on their formal recording career. The simple, unaffected work here--some of it unaccompanied vocals and some of it instrumental reels--unfolds at an ideal pace, the invited audience in perfect synch with the group in its early prime. Ironically, it would be two years before this version of the Dubliners, with Luke Kelly in their lineup, would record again, as the latter would depart soon after for an extended stay in London, and not return until they did FINNEGAN WAKES in 1966. The original record is a perfect snapshot of four musicians at the outset of a long and gloriously popular career.
