Flipped, Astonishing Tales' September 2009 release, offers listeners an innovative blend of blues, rock, jazz, and pop impulses. The band's rhythmic and melodic dexterity emanates from the strength of it's component personalities, Henry Bloomfield and Davis Vigneault, who each contribute vocals, a different pair of instruments (piano/drums and guitar/bass, respectively), and a novel musical perspective. On Flipped, Astonishing Tales emphasizes it's dueling personalities by putting Davis' songs on "side a" and Henry's on "side b," an anachronistic structure reminiscent of their earliest influences. The arresting simplicity of "Charlie" and "Postlude at St. John's" provides counterpoint to the layered, full-bodied sound of "Wires" and "Fall to Me." "I Won't Keep My Voice Down," half ballad and half anthem, leads the listener unsuspectingly into a labyrinth of trap-doors and hairpin turns in "The Astonishing Tale," introducing the record's flip side. The evocative lyrics of "Billie Baby" complement the poignant sentiment of "Rhythm." The record concludes with the title track, "Flipped Upside Down," a tune with music composed by Henry and lyrics written by Davis, bringing the album back to the center.
