Since I bought another similar model alongside this one which arrived at the same time, and also had a laptop with PCMCIA slots to format the hard drive, I was able to fully test and troubleshoot it. It turned out that the Nikon N90 body had a faulty shutter and after swapping it with a good one, it turned out the sensor was faulty. Not the most careful packaging, but everything arrived without damage. It's most likely that the seller was honest in their description.
