I had some old video cassettes a friend wanted to transfer to MPEG files. I started to play the videos and the quality of image gradually degraded. Having brought a second VCR from another source, the videos played fine - the problem was with this VCR. In fairness to the seller, the VCR did arrive working, but it had presumably only been tested for a few minutes - a longer test would have shown the problem.
